IMPSA Presentation

IMPSA is a renewable energy company. They specialize in wind and solar energy. They are a private, family-owned company that was started in Mendoza, Argentina. They produce energy solutions around the world. IMPSA has operations in multiple Latin American countries as well as the U.S., Malaysia, the Philippines, China and South Africa. They have a global efficiency of 94%. Their production facilities are in Brazil, Argentina and Malaysia.

IMPSA is a leader in hydraulic generating equipment and they are also a leader in EPC projects in Latin America. They have ISO9001 and ISO140001 certificates as well as other accreditations. However, they need some more certificates before they can compete with larger, global corporations like GE.

The renewable energy industry has not yet been developed in Argentina. The current government is not particularly fond of wind energy and therefore it has been difficult to develop. This is because the people in Argentina really don't understand renewable energy and are hesitant to invest in it. There aren't any incentives for consumers to switch to renewable energy either. Right now a wind turbine is erected every day but current wind energy capacity is 2000 megawatts. This could be greatly improved if only the government would subsidize wind energy costs the way they subsidize electricity costs.

The company's financial issues are also very prominent. It is difficult to get foreign investment because foreign companies want to invest in USD and get USD back. This is not possible because of foreign exchange policies. Argentina has started to barter with China to get around this but even then, it's been very difficult to get investment in Argentina. This will remain a serious issue and hindrance to the growth of the renewable energy industry in Argentina.
