DE MARTINO WINERY!

DE MARTINO WINERY!

De Martino winery was the perfect way to put an end to the long list of business visits. Guys in their shirts and blazers, and girls in their eveningwear were all dressed smartly and ready for their exciting tour of the winery. After all, which young adult wouldn’t be excited to visit a winery, especially in a country with 18 as their drinking age?
Though it was one of the smaller wineries, nevertheless, it had a traditional and exotic feel to it. The high roof with yellow light chandeliers, the wooden interiors and furniture with glistening varnish, all complemented each other well. I believe, the fact that it was a family owned business explains its size. Personally, I would love to have a winery as a family business and to taste different wines on a daily basis.
However, Sebastian De Martino through his presentation made it clear that wine making is not all about wine tasting. There are many technical things that need to be meticulously taken care of, such as; the geographical location where the grapes are harvested, the frequency of the oak barrels that are used for storage, and most importantly the distribution of wines. Even though one can make extraordinary wines, nonetheless, until and unless they are available to customers, there is no point of producing them. He also provided interesting facts about the leading countries with wine consumption and exporters. The knowledge was really helpful to understand the wine industry and the contemporary global business climate.

Moving on the fun part, the tour was kicked off with glasses filled with white wines and the two Vickies of the family eagerly waiting for us. It was a short and sweet tour that took us from the plantation where the grapes were harvested, to the go down where the oak barrels of various sizes stored wines, to the big containers where temperature is regulated and finally to the gift shop where the final product was sold.

Throughout the tour we got to taste different wines. The wines were smooth and the taste made it easy to gulp it down unlike most wines. One of the fascinating facts that I learned was that they used only the squeezed juice of the white grapes for producing white wine, while they used the grape skin, juice and seeds in the red wine production. Furthermore, I wasn’t aware about the fact that wines can be produced using a variety of grapes mixed together instead of using only one kind.

I always used to buy a more expensive wine thinking that it will be better. However, De Martino made me realize that wines with affordable prices at times can be the better option. Their wines were so smooth and at the same time they were within the price range of a typical student’s budget. There wasn’t even one individual who didn’t buy a bottle from the gift shop. I would advice every wine lover and the non-wine lovers to visit this beautiful place, and if not, then at least try there exquisite wines. I’m sure they will be available in your country.
