Estancia Santa Susana Part 2

After partaking in authentic gaucho activities in the hot sun, a bell was rung which meant for all of us to go inside for a nice meal of a variety of salads and meats. Some of the meats consisted of chorizo (sausage), ribs, chicken, and bife de chorizo (rib eye steak).  Many of us were surprised by the blood sausage that was served to us.  These were all freshly cooked in a giant room called a "parilla" which is a room for grilling and barbecuing.  Our savory meals were accompanied by a glass of Norton red wine and followed by a nice dish of flan and a side of dulce de leche for dessert.

Once everyone was finished with their lunch, we were delighted with a tango and samba show performed by Argentinean folkloricd ancers, Rosana and Walter. They were accompanied by a live guitarist and singer. Later, Walter performed a traditional Argentinean dance which incorporated bolas. These are throwing weapons which are often used by gauchos while dancing. Walter was very impressive with his bola skills. This was a fantastic show that truly highlighted the culture for our group. There was never a dull moment on the stage. Eventually, the majority of our group got up from our seats and joined the gauchos on the dance floor. Seeing everyone have a good time together was definitely one of the highlights of the day.

Not long after the performances and dancing, the gauchos had to go back to the fields and prepare for the showcase of their horseback riding skills.  All of us gathered around and sat on benches as we watched four gauchos ride around on their horses.  Alongside were about 30 other horses that appeared to be well trained and followed the gauchos every command. In the middle of the dirt field was a wooden archway that dropped down three individual rings. Each gaucho got a running start on their horses and would stand up tall on their stirrups. Once they approached the archway they held out a metal stick and attempted to get it through the ring, which was about the size of a silver dollar. The crowd strongly applauded the gauchos every time their impressive aiming skills would follow through. Every time a gaucho successfully got their stick through the ring, they would give the ring to a woman from the audience, and in return the girl would give him a beso (kiss) on the cheek.

Our trip to the Estancia Santa Susana was definitely a memorable one. We had perfect weather, wonderful performances and great company. Being able to see all of the culture that this one ranch held was an exciting experience. We are very happy to be able to witness such extreme lifestyles here in Argentina, from the busy city of Buenos Aires to the humble country side. We are sad that our last day in Argentina is approaching, however we are excited to see what Chile has for us!
