So far during our time in Argentina, we have learned a tremendous amount about the people here. There are a number of blatant similarities between Americans and Argentines. These differences can be things such as habits, fashion, approachability, sense of humor, and leisurely activities, just to name a few. One similarity between the two would be the drinking culture. The restaurants and bars that are along the streets resemble some American habits, in terms of beer logos and frequent casual drinking.
An obvious
difference is that how slow Argentines conduct themselves. They tend to move
much slower in most things that they do and nothing is rushed. For example,
customer service at restaurants takes far much more time in Argentina than in
the US. For instance, one evening students arrived at dinner at 8
pm and did not leave the restaurant until after 11pm, solely due to the
pace of the wait staff. As expected, Argentines also eat at a slower pace, and
take their time between courses. Their dinner at night consists of a 3 to 4
course meal that starts rather late in the night, between 8pm to even midnight.
One apparent difference
between where we are from and here, is the abundance of homeless people. Homeless
people are found frequently, and consist of all ages. Also, these individuals
tend to be more aggressive in terms of begging. For instance, one evening at
dinner, a women holding a child approached a table while holding out a napkin
asking for a slice of pizza. Not only do grown adults beg for food and money,
but very young children as well. Numerous children can be seen running the
streets alone all day long wearing little clothing, soliciting for anything
they can get their hands on.
Regarding fashion
trends in Argentina, a trend seen more often than not is platform shoes.
These shoes are sold in numerous clothing/shoe stores all around the cities we have been to in Argentina. If these shoes were worn in the United States, it would be considered very unfashionable. Another trend, mainly in men, is wearing business casual attire on a regular basis, not just for business events. This consists of button down shirts and khaki colored pants.
Jeans and sweats seem to not be the most popular choice among business men. More regarding the appearance of Argentines, is their physical characteristics. Most Argentines have relatively darker skin and hair. There are few, if any, with fair skin and natural blonde hair.
